A mod worth checking out: Nehrim - At fates edge.

Ever heard of Nehrim - At fates edge?

It's a total conversion mod for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (that have nothing to do with the TES world) that's simply amazingly made. And it should be, as it's been in development for several years by a german group of modders.

While time doesn not necessary equal quality (i'm looking at you, Daikatana!), this group certainly spent their time very well. And have hired as many as entire 56 professional voice actors, something Bethesda should learn to do in the future.

And they also had access to a professional recording studio for the voices and the custom made music!

I'm not going to spoil the story or the setting here, as that's definitivly one of the charming parts of exploring the wonderous world of Nehrim. Indeed, if i didn't know better, i would think the best writers of this genre came together to write out this beautiful piece. But average time to complete the main quest is around 50 hours! But be warned, it might seem linear during the first hours, but once you leave the "newbie" level, it's all freeform.
Indeed, even the graphics have gotten an overhaul.

The fighting mechanism is still much the same , but one major "fix" is that instead of leveling up by skill improvements, you gain experience for your kills, and better yet, the enemies does not level along you. No more fighting puny bandits for hours once you reach the higher levels! Your skills still improve with time as you use them though, but when you level up, you gain learning points that can be spent for a coin to improve skills much faster. It's much like a hybrid of the Gothic series (even the "learning to skin/extract claws etc etc" is in Nehrim) and oblivion. There are of course many other changes, which you can read about on their site further down.

One really (and i mean REALLY) huge improvement over Oblivion is that everything actually looks, feel and probably is handplaced. So no more plodding through "generic dungeon XXI" which plagued many parts of Oblivion. A great thing that Oblivion missed that were in Morrowind, was that by exploring places, caves, dungeons and whatnot, you might discover uniqe and useful artifacts and items. Or even one of Nehrims "side stuff" like collecting 100 magic symbols that are spread across the land. Oh, and the land is at least as huge as Oblivions world, if not even larger!

This is definitivly a must try next time you boot up TES IV. If nothing else, check out the music, pics and more at their site:
